Hi, I’m Charlie
I’m a therapist in Mill Valley, California, working with children, teens, adults, couples, and families. I believe therapy should be a place where you can slow down, be yourself, and begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface. You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what you need or even have the words for it. We can start wherever you are.
A little about how I came to this work
My passion for surfing began in early childhood and has remained a constant thread throughout my life. In college I discovered yoga, and completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training. Together, these experiences began to shape how I understand the relationship between the body, emotions, and our sense of self.
Surfing gave me the place to listen—to my surroundings and to the subtle signals of my body. Yoga gave me a deeper vocabulary for that embodied awareness, helping me recognize how emotions and experiences can be felt and processed physically, even before we have words for them.
Over time, this perspective led me toward psychotherapy. I came to understand surfing as teaching me how to listen, yoga as giving me a language for what I was experiencing, and therapy as a framework for understanding it. That perspective continues to shape my work with clients, helping them slow down, become curious about themselves, and develop a deeper connection with their authentic Self. I believe that developing greater self awareness can create more choice in how we respond to ourselves and the world around while allowing us to connect more deeply with those we care about.
This feels particularly meaningful in my work with boys and men. Many of us grow up with messages that make vulnerability, uncertainty, or emotional expression difficult to access. Sometimes those experiences show up as anger, withdrawal, isolation, or simply feeling disconnected from ourselves.
I believe that becoming more connected to our inner experience is not a weakness, but a form of strength. Furthermore, I believe connection with Self brings a clarity that allows us to move through life more intuitively.
I aim to offer clients a space to slow down, become curious about themselves, and develop a deeper sense of connection and choice.
My approach to therapy
My work is grounded in psychodynamic and relational therapy, with an emphasis on somatic awareness, family systems, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
I believe that many of the patterns we struggle with in the present have a history. We may find ourselves repeating relationship dynamics, reacting more strongly than we understand, feeling stuck in familiar ways of thinking or behaving, or carrying emotions that seem bigger than the situation in front of us. Together, we can become curious about where these patterns come from and how earlier relationships and experiences may still shape the way you relate to yourself and others today.
The goal isn't to live in the past, but to understand it well enough that it has less control over the present.
For some people, words aren't the easiest place to begin. Somatic therapy offers another pathway into self-understanding by paying attention to what happens in the body—breathing, tension, posture, energy, impulses, and sensations. I also draw from family systems and IFS to explore the relationships and different parts of ourselves that influence how we respond, particularly when those responses may be protecting something important.
Ultimately, therapy is about becoming more curious about who you are, how you got here, and who you might become. My role is to create a grounded, supportive space where you can better understand yourself, feel more connected to your experience, and develop greater choice in how you move through the world.
